The Holy Grail

“The search for it is the search for the divine in all of us.”

Marcus Brody

Walking through the world on the trail of the Holy Grail is very tired, so a few years ago I decided to make my own, of course replica of the one in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It was, as always a way to learn with a thing that I like and enjoy. For more accurate replicas and artwork, my friends Fedora_Smith and Restaurajones do real wonders.

As for almost all the props from the movies there were several grails, and as we select different frames we will see slight differences, but in my case it was not accurate, (only a way to have fun), so I’ll  not go into these depths.

I must admit that of all life on hearing “is the cup of a carpenter”, I thought it was a wooden cup … until I realized it did not have to be this way, only concerned a humble cup.

I wanted to learn to make of plaster with a template.

Using multiple images of the movie I did a plane to cut the negatives I’d need, and since I had it  I modeled in 3D to get the idea of how it would be.

The method involves adding plaster axis until it reaches the “template” that will give the shape, so the template is the negative of the piece we want to obtain.

In this case, we will make a preform for the concave (interior) portion. Round and round casting plaster slowly until we get the part. As the shape was cut by hand on a sheet of PVC, it had imperfection s, but I really like seeing those little nicks in the grail over.

On this half sphere, we are going to build the real cup, but to continue pouring plaster, as we don’t want sticking, we first fill the pores and give it some release agent. (In this case I covered the pores with diluted white glue and used wax  as mold release agent, as I had no specific products by hand,)

And round, and plaster, little by little .. we approaching the edge of the die … and finally finished cup.

Once out of the shaft and separate the inner part and the cup itself, I covered the hole left by the axis in the center with a little portion of plaster and let it dry.

I used “english red” to paint the background and gold leaf, which I will not explain how its applied (among other things because I’m far from an expert). If anyone is curious there are many websites where its explained by people with more experience than me.

And to age it … well, they may not be very orthodox methods, but I gace some layers of what was happening to me. White paint, gray paint, lacquer and talcum powder …and putting it in a bag with sand and shake it a bit.

This was the result.

I hope you enjoy it as much as us. Occasionally we have a drink on it, so we stay so young.

Grail Tablet II. “The rubbing”

Any good searcher of the Holy Grail, has some tips to help you on his way, and carrying your Grail Tablet would be too heavy.
So our friend Henry Jones had the brilliant idea of making a rubbing of the stone in order to preserve it among the rest of the documentation collected for years in his famous Grail Diary.

Despite being an object that is a few seconds on the screen, we all remember it as Jr later completed the inscription with the Knight’s shield.

I always liked the first version, since is the one that Henry saves and that is why we have replicated it.

The most difficult may seem silly but was finding the right paper. After various tests and look for all the specialized stores, we found a paper that has the same texture and even the same way to “crack” when folded.

Despite having several life-size tables, is not as easy as it looks tracing the rubbing on that surface and achieve the same results, so we decided to make a special table. Our “rubbing maker”. Only one detail of the “maker”, so you can see that everything requires patience, it was a little difficult placing each letter in place but it worth it.

These are the tracings obtained. Before and after folding to save in the Journal of Henry.

Grail Tablet

The Grail tablet was discovered in the mountains at north of Ankara, as told in The Last Crusade. It is one of the two tracks left by the knights of the First Crusade who guarded the Holy Grail and pointing its location. The text engraved in Latin on sandstone describes the way forward to meet him, but unfortunately is broken, and without the top we not have a place to start.

I think that is the Indy movies object that I like more, I guess because it took me many hours (even though I got rid of the first and then repeated).

As I had no intention of using a real stone, I decided to do it on a sheet of high density polyethylene foam, which is easy to handle and has a thickness suitable for this job.

Although I had seen someone who had done so, I didn’t like the way they engraved the letters with a router (by hand, not CNC), I prefer to “write” with solvent. So get to work.

I got a template of the full text of the table, kindly provided by my good friend Peter (Barnett_College at Indy’s issues) and I went over the letters with a pen to mark them on the material.

Proceso tablilla del grial

So far it was only a matter of patience. The following step requires a little more care, and as I say, I tried different types of milling cutters brought me Miguel, butthey did not convincied me and opted for the solvent, which although is a simple (and fun) but can be some uncontrollable until you got the hang of the brush. (First I tried dipping the tip of a marker and a pen, but no, better a brush)

As for the shape of the table, we used screenshots and also a book that every good fan of this saga knows “From Star Wars to Indiana Jones” and I call “the bible” because of the number of times I take it as reference for this type of work.

With a abrasive file is given the basic shape and with fine sandpaper termination is given.

This was the result after paint:

After a while I made another, from which I took a mold, with it I have made a copy in plaster and other in resin (loaded with microspherules, to relieve the weight)

Actually these are not the tables we use to make the Grail Tablet rubbing… That’s another story that we will tell you another day.
