“Partners in time” Frame. Back to the future III

As you may have noticed, by the things that you’ve shown so far, we like to make replicas of things in the movies, it is a good way to learn and meet new chalenges. One day someone in a forum said: Someone dares to do this? and.. here we go!

This framework is the one that Doc gives to Marty when he returns from the “West”, as a souvenir of their stay there. Tthe picture is well known, and many fans of the movie, like to have a similar framework.

In this case we start from scratch, since there is no (or not found) commercial moldings with the same shape. So we went to look for pine sticks in various measures to build the frame.

As for the color, as not distinguished very well in the film, we have opted for the aged mahogany with bitumen

The original is supposed that ornaments are embossed metal, so with tin foil and a little patience we get some kind of originals and we could make a mold.

We thought to load with aluminium to give it metallic appearance, but the polish make it lost some relief, so a bit of paint, an aged and ready.

This has been the result. With its passepartout and dedication.

And this other picture to compare:

     Partners in Time

While not perfect, all the fans I know who have wanted one, they liked it, and it’s always a pleasure for us when they write and say, “I’ve recieved it. Love it!”

There are several photos circulating on the net, some fans have been changing and modifying them, so we distribuy the frames with uncut passepartout  so each one could set the one you like, and write a dedication in your own way. Some even asked us the decorations just because you want to make the frame itself. Of course, I always thought that the best replica to collect (well, maybe not, but the most satisfying) is that one you have made yourself. So I encourage all fan of this type of collections to do it yourself.

  • Middle Earth Map

    Middle Earth Map

The idea of making this map came out just wanting to try a glass engraver “Dremel Engraver” that Miguel gave me. This is not a rotary tool as most Dremel tool, if a punch moves forward and backward.

The realization is just a matter of patience, since the drawing is traced, so it was a matter of a couple of afternoons.

    First day of engraved

Well, I thought that the engraved parts would shine if I put lights on the sides, but its not easy to be a homogeneous light.

    Primera prueba de iluminación
    First test of enlightened

To put a strip of LEDs and illuminate the outline I had to make a framework with sufficient gap. These strips are sold in electronics stores, and although some already come with their own power source, they are typically sold at 9v, 12v and 24v.

The pity is that in the first trip made by car from my workshop, where I made the frame to the house … the glass was broken in two halfs. Well, maybe someday we will repeat it.

    Broken

(The glass was a part of those that are mounted without molding, so it’s easy to find one of the same size, is something to consider when making crafts, look for materials that are easily replaceable, if we start from something we find and that inspires us … will also be a funny handcraft, but a single piece)

  • Grail Tablet

    Grail Tablet

The Grail tablet was discovered in the mountains at north of Ankara, as told in The Last Crusade. It is one of the two tracks left by the knights of the First Crusade who guarded the Holy Grail and pointing its location. The text engraved in Latin on sandstone describes the way forward to meet him, but unfortunately is broken, and without the top we not have a place to start.

I think that is the Indy movies object that I like more, I guess because it took me many hours (even though I got rid of the first and then repeated).

As I had no intention of using a real stone, I decided to do it on a sheet of high density polyethylene foam, which is easy to handle and has a thickness suitable for this job.

Although I had seen someone who had done so, I didn’t like the way they engraved the letters with a router (by hand, not CNC), I prefer to “write” with solvent. So get to work.

I got a template of the full text of the table, kindly provided by my good friend Peter (Barnett_College at Indy’s issues) and I went over the letters with a pen to mark them on the material.

    Proceso tablilla del grial

So far it was only a matter of patience. The following step requires a little more care, and as I say, I tried different types of milling cutters brought me Miguel, butthey did not convincied me and opted for the solvent, which although is a simple (and fun) but can be some uncontrollable until you got the hang of the brush. (First I tried dipping the tip of a marker and a pen, but no, better a brush)
    Proceso tablilla del grial 2

As for the shape of the table, we used screenshots and also a book that every good fan of this saga knows “From Star Wars to Indiana Jones” and I call “the bible” because of the number of times I take it as reference for this type of work.

With a abrasive file is given the basic shape and with fine sandpaper termination is given.

This was the result after paint:

After a while I made another, from which I took a mold, with it I have made a copy in plaster and other in resin (loaded with microspherules, to relieve the weight)

Actually these are not the tables we use to make the Grail Tablet rubbing… That’s another story that we will tell you another day.

    Now availabe in our tienda.
