Harry Potter’s Howler

¿What’s a Howler? Well according to the world of Harry Potter created by JK Rowling, a Howler is a magical letter which it read itself with a loud and aggressive tone, like a reprimand. Well, in the long saga of Harry Potter this scene appears in the second film in the series, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” and Ron Weasley it receives from his mother. The Howler reads as follows:

Ronald Weasley! How dare you steal that car! I am absolutely disgusted! Your father’s now facing an enguiry

at work & it’s all your fault! If you put another toe out

of line we’ll bring you straight home!Oh, and Ginny dear,

congratulations on making Gryffindor, Your father and I

are so proud! Pfrrrrrrrrr!!

Here you have our version of the Howler, that if, it does not move and it does not scream, but there is more than pretty is to me, personally, I like more this version because although it does not move and it does not scream, neither it is  “destroys” when you finish reading. Made of aluminum and attached to a wooden base with a screw. The sense of stability and rigidity is very good and as a decorative element freak is tremendous.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we.

The Emerald Tablet

Today we bring you something that probably will be unknown, The Emerald Tablet. A brief intro taken from Wikipedia.

The Emerald Tablet, also known as Smaragdine Table, Tabula Smaragdina, or The Secret of Hermes, is a text purporting to reveal the secret of the primordial substance and its transmutations. It claims to be the work of Hermes Trismegistus (“Hermes the Thrice-Greatest”), a legendary Hellenistic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.

Below are shown several translations including the Arabic, the Latin, and one from Isaac Newton. The compact and cryptic text was highly regarded by European alchemists as the foundation of their art, in particular of its Hermetic tradition. Interpreting the layers of meanings of the Emerald Tablet, from individual words to the overall meaning, is fraught with possibilities, but certainly Alchemy’s Magnum opus and the ancient, classical, element system are the basis of any sound explanation, as they provide a key to the ideas of earth, fire, sun, moon, etc., common to all the translations.

Two years and half ago to María Jesús was commissioned to replicate “The Emerald Tablet.” We had no idea wthat it was, but as we like challenges, began to inquire and she found a drawing of the tablet, sent by the “buyer” and we got down to work. First of all we would think how we could do it. Before the engagement we had made a replica of the “Tablet of the Grail” of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” so we had little idea of how we could do. But this table, unlike the Indy, had the letters in low relief and not engraved.

Our replica is recognized by the International Alchemy Guild, as the “accepted version of what the Emerald Tablet really looked like.”

It was commissioned by the same association to be exhibited in the first museum of alchemy in the U.S., which is being built in the Egyptian Museum in San Jose, California.

Then we tell you how we did it.

  1. The first step was to take the picture at convenient size and engrave it on a “porexpan” plate, (but  mirrored)

  2. The second step was making a mold with alginate so that the letters were as they should be, i.e. in relief.

  3. Once this is done we did copy of the alginate piece in silicone, which will serve us to take the final pieces

    Molde silicona
    Silicone mold
  4. Once we have the silicone mold, we assembled the box to make all the copies we want, (while the mold resist)

  5. Now we pour the resin to get our copy.

    Vertido de resina

  6. And so we have our copy to add the finishing touch.

  7. Finally a touch to give your final result color with green lacquer.

At  last, we have given a touch of powder for look older and give greater realism. And now you know how to make your own Emerald Tablet. Should be in a museum … and thither goes.

Rosetta Stone

First, a little bit of history.

The Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian granodiorite inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis in 196 BCE on behalf of King Ptolemy V. The decree appears in three scripts: the upper text is Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle portion Demotic script, and the lowest Ancient Greek. Because it presents essentially the same text in all three scripts (with some minor differences between them), it provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

This brief introduction is taken from Wikipedia. We will present a replica of course smaller than the original. It is true that it’s not a faithful replica of the stone but the most important is the inscription, though a more realistic stone  is in pending tasks. As indicated by the  Wikipedia entry is a fragment that has three distinct scriptures from each other and although the size of the reproduction is not too large, 110 x 150 mm., it looks very good.

Our replica is made of  laser engraved methacrylate. Because it was that we had at the time. Now with the knowledge gained from our previous work, we are planning to replicate it as the original but reduced. Because I do not think there are many people who can afford a replica of the original size, 1123 x 757 x 284 mm, and weight (760 kg), to bring it home.
